This one-semester course will give a brief introduction on the current financial markets - which is itself a very complicated, comprehensive and ever-evolving system and thus we specifically focus on:
1. The market structure: we will look at the basics of various financial markets/products - who are the participants and how to access these markets/products.
2. Investment decision particularly portfolio allocation: we will establish the concept of risk and return in a financial investment and how a sensible investment decision can be made;
3. Asymmetric information: a very important factor that influences the functioning of financial markets (in fact for many aspects of our daily life).
4. We will also cover some basics of equity, debt and derivative trading.
5. Some latest FinTech stuff! For example, we will talk about Bitcoins.
At least two computer workshops will be set up to practice some results in portfolio allocation and asymmetric information models.
